This test message in Gmail:

enter image description here

is correctly found by a search for "Length is 7403":

enter image description here

but incorrectly not found by a search for "Length is 7418"

enter image description here

The message body message is 85,075 bytes long and the part up to and including "Length is 7403" is 7,934 bytes (the size having been inflated by emailing since being originally 7403 bytes in the source file).

Any idea what's going on? I really hope Gmail search doesn't fail past 8K bytes on all long messages!

  • Could this be related to this other gmail search fail? webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/99283/… – Paul de Barros Oct 13 '16 at 22:20
  • It could also have something to do with the way that Gmail search uses "tokens" (at least according to this answer: webapps.stackexchange.com/a/58592/108464 ) – Paul de Barros Oct 13 '16 at 22:39
  • @Paul As siblings only, I think. But thanks for that heads-up. – ChrisJJ Oct 14 '16 at 11:14
