I was listening music on YouTube Music, and noticed a new entry on Google Chrome's menu offering to Install YouTube Music....

Playing a music video in YouTube Music on Google Chrome, with the browser's menu showing a "Install YouTube Music..." entry

This option does not appear on non-YouTube Music pages, or in an incognito session.

YouTube homepage with Google Chrome's menu, showing there's no such "Install YouTube Music" or similar entry available

Playing the same music video in YouTube Music on Google Chrome's incognito mode, the browser doesn't show the menu entry

The entry isn't available in Firefox, either:

Playing the same music video in YouTube Music on Mozilla Firefox, the browser doesn't show any menu entry regarding an app installation

Does the website declare the availability of that menu entry somehow? Can my own website add any such entry to Google Chrome's menu? Are there any other such entries that can be shown in Google Chrome?

The screenshots are all on macOS, but this entry shows up in Google Chrome for Windows, too (haven't tried incognito or other browsers in Windows).

  • I've just tried a new Google Chrome profile with no Google account signed in, and the menu entry is there as well. Commented Jul 13, 2020 at 14:23

That entry is also shown on Edge (see image below). The menu appears because the site is flagged as installable as stated here:

If a website you visit is a PWA and flagged as installable, a small Add icon will appear in the right of the browser address bar

The + is also shown on your first image.

Yes it does. You have to follow the requirements described here:

To make the web site installable, it needs the following things in place:

  • A web manifest, with the correct fields filled in
  • The web site to be served from a secure (HTTPS) domain
  • An icon to represent the app on the device
  • A service worker registered, to allow the app to work offline (this is required only by Chrome for Android currently)

Are there any other such entries that can be shown in Google Chrome?

Yes, as seen on the image below.

All the images above are from Edge, but the same hold true for Chrome.

Those website are installable because they offer Progressive Web Apps (PWA):

A progressive web application takes advantage of the latest technologies to combine the best of web and mobile apps. Think of it as a website built using web technologies but that acts and feels like an app. Recent advancements in the browser and in the availability of service workers and in the Cache and Push APIs have enabled web developers to allow users to install web apps to their home screen, receive push notifications and even work offline.

Edge offers to install the site as an app even if it is not flagged as installable.

  • I've navigated to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_web_application in Google Chrome but there's no menu entry there. Can you share a link in which you got the Install this site as an app for Wikipedia in Edge? Commented Jul 13, 2020 at 15:21

My bad. I jumped the gun with Wikipedia. See edit. Added other sites and Edge offering to install other sites as app even when they are not marked as installable. Commented Jul 13, 2020 at 16:34
  • Thanks. I was able to check that with a Twitter profile in Chrome. Commented Jul 13, 2020 at 17:31
