Google insists that dots don't matter in an email address.

However:

If dots really don't matter, why do they appear to matter?

Because the dots don't matter in an email address, but they do matter in your login name, which is what your Gmail account name is.

So, your account is firstname.lastname. (Actually, it's [email protected] because you can create a login with a non-Gmail email address.)

You can receive mail sent to [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc.

But when you log in you need that dot in the right place.

As for sending without the dot, you can do that too, but you have to set up an alias in your Gmail settings. (See: Change my Gmail sender address from firstname.lastname to firstnamelastname)

  • After reading several good SE answers as well as Google Forum discussions about Google delivering email as if it had no dots (in the real email address you intended), this nicely summed up the situation. Many of us are now plagued by the Google Forms feature called Response Receipts being used by bad actors to cause nearly identical dotless emails to be sent to us from a validated Google domain like cases-outbound-prod.bounces.google.com (mailed by) and signed by google.com.
